Conditional Completion Actions Overview

The eagerly awaited conditional completion actions feature is now available in Summer '22 release of MCAE/Pardot. So what can you do with them and what are the limitations? I recently explored this topic in a presentation to the Marketing Life Hacks community group.

Some things we discussed in this session:

  • Limitations: the 1/6/16 Rule, plus the "0" group

  • Using "Contains" to best effect

  • Often forgotten features that add power to conditional completion actions

  • Suggested use cases for Conditional Completion Actions such as: - Selectively creating leads - Conditional resubscribe - Event RSVP

  • Gotchas to watch out for

Tool mentioned in this session: Creuz Your Data.

Great video, Bill! Regarding the sequence in which completion actions fire: yeah, the documentation might say they fire randomly, but when I did my own testing they *absolutely* fired in the order they appear in the list. Particularly problematic is when "Assign to user" is placed before field updates, which syncs the Prospect to CRM *before* all field updates have been made, which then requires an additional sync a few minutes later, which causes issues when you have fields set to "Use most recently updated record." Sounds like the product team told you rightly, but maybe Pardot is "officially" saying actions do not fire in sequential order to cover themselves in the rare cases where they do not?

@adam Good points, although with the sync speeds I've noticed as of late, I'd say the field changes catching up with a assignment action on a second round is unlikely to be a consistent behavior. The other thing I neglected to mention that I've noticed is the prior warning about putting assignment actions, add to campaign actions and tasks in the same completion action no longer appears. "In practice" I've had no particular issues with ignoring this, but I find it interesting that it's gone now.

*As of April 2022, Pardot has been renamed Marketing Cloud Account Engagement, as part of Salesforce's effort to organize all the marketing products under the same platform umbrella. "MCAE" is simply the same Pardot we know and love under a new name. The product is temporarily being referred to as "Marketing Cloud Account Engagement powered by Pardot."
